What is a seismic earthquake sensor?

The seismic earthquake sensors detect P-wave and/or S-wave. P-wave is an initial tremor (small pitch) of the earthquake that comes before S-wave, a major tremor (main shock).
Detected signals are sent to control units for immediate initiation of emergency procedure, including safe shutdown of the facilities.

How the seismic earthquake sensors work?

For example, if a big earthquake occurs, the elevator shaft will probably be damaged and the elevator may stop or the door may deform and not be able to open, resulting in people being trapped inside.
In another case, if the piping system of a plant facility is damaged by a big earthquake, a dreadful gas explosion may occur.

Based on many experiences, Japan, as the worst earthquake-damaged country, is taking measures to protect people's lives from earthquakes.
We have various types of seismic earthquake sensors, and they are indispensable for the earthquake disaster prevention.

Product Lineup

i. Mechanical seismic earthquake sensors are for detecting S-wave only.
The mechanical type senses acceleration by a weight magnet with stable performance.
It has high accuracy and a wide range of characteristics on the low-frequency side.

Even if a power outage occurs after an earthquake, the mechanical seismic earthquake sensor operates without electricity*, so it is effective in detecting aftershocks.​

*Power is required for remote reset.​

ii. Electronic seismic earthquake sensors are classified into two types according to the seismic waves detected; P-wave only and both P-wave and S-wave.
The electronic type senses acceleration by electrostatic capacitance.

The P-wave seismic earthquake sensor is recommended for preparing the elevator to stop by detecting the initial tremor (small pitch) of an earthquake that comes before a major tremor (main shock) detected by S-wave sensors.​

Remote Reset
